Extreme Zoom
March 2012

Normally, we prefer compact cameras but we couldn't resist trying the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS's 35x zoom that goes from extra wide 24mm to super telephoto 840mm. Except for the size of the camera, which is not that big for having such a huge zoom range, the SX40's buttons, controls and menus are similar to those of other Canon compacts, they are easy to use. Image quality is very good for this type of camera and sensor size.

Optical image stabilization is essential for a superzoom and the SX40's is very effective. It's simply amazing that the camera can be handheld to take sharp pictures at 840mm. In Barcelona, on Montjuïc hill, we had a lot of fun zooming and taking pictures of buildings and structures all the way across the city. Along with the impressively long telephoto, the 24mm wide end is great to have and it makes this camera truly versatile.

Overall, this camera is perfect for people who like to take telephoto pictures. We'd definitely take one on a safari if we ever get that lucky.
